Mindful Consumption, the way out? – Part 1: Edible Foods

Dear Friends!

Below are some gathas/mindful verses to recite with our in- and out breath, reflecting on the food and our world.

There is a also a podcast available on Mindful Consumption, the way out? – Part 1: Edible Foods at the Deer Park Dharma Cast.

Serving our food:

Beings all over the Earth – are struggling to live. – I aspire to practice deeply – so all may have enough to eat.

Before eating:

In this food, – I see clearly – the entire universe – supporting my existence.

Food Contemplation before eating:

This food is a gift of the earth, the sky, numerous living beings and much hard work.

May we eat with mindfulness and gratitude so as to be worthy to receive it.

May we recognize and transform our unwholesome mental formations, especially our greed, and learn to eat with moderation.

May we keep our compassion alive by eating in such a way that we reduce the suffering of living beings, preserve our planet and reverse the process of global warming.

We accept this food so that we may nurture our brotherhood and sisterhood, strengthen our Sangha and nourish our ideal of serving all beings.

FOODFood Contemplation for Young People

This food is the gift of the whole universe: The earth, the sky, the rain, and the sun.

We thank the people who have made this food, especially the farmers, the people at the market and the cooks.

We only put on our plate as much food as we can eat.

We want to chew the food slowly so that we can enjoy it.

This food gives us energy to practice being more loving and understanding.

We eat this food in order to be healthy and happy, and to love each other as family.

May compassion and health grow in your life and in our society!
